Description:

A very beautiful but approx. 20 km long tour, mostly shaded, to one of the most famous beaches in Ogliastra: Cala Luna or as the locals say Elune. Named after the Rio Codula di Luna river that flows into the bay. The long drive by car and the long stony path are probably the reasons why this tour is not frequented by many. There is not much activity here in the off-season. In winter, you‘re usually alone here. You can even do this long hike in the rain. At the beginning of the trail, you also pass by the longest cave in Sardinia, the Grotta Su Palu, with currently 40 kilometers of discovered passages. More suited for experienced cave explorers.

Tour information:

Difficulty: Easy along the trail, but good fitness is required due to the length. Directions: Coming from Baunei on the SS125, turn right 2 km before the turnoff to Urzulei onto a small road (Cala Luna is signposted there). The road gets narrower and winds down into the river valley. It is conditionally recommended for larger campers; vans are still manageable. The trail starts at the Teletottes parking lot and leads through the gorge along the Rio Codula di Luna river. Initially, you can walk on both sides of the river, but the bridge is broken (as of 2023). If you want to cross, you‘ll have to climb through the riverbed somewhere. You‘ll often walk in the riverbed during the hike and may have to climb over some large rocks. Generally, we stick to the shepherd‘s path along the river. There are occasional paths that are mostly trodden by animals leading up and along the hillside. The riverbed serves as our orientation. There are hardly any steep inclines on the way down, where we descend about 250 meters to the sea. The ascent on the way back is also hardly noticeable, as you overcome these 250 meters evenly over 10 km. We reach Cala Luna bay. There is also a small bar (open from around May to October). During this time, this bay is the hotspot in Sardinia. It‘s possible to feel crowded here, so it‘s advisable to go early. Make sure to calculate reaching the trailhead before dark on the return journey and take plenty of water and snacks with you.
